What is Hound Music?

In Full Cry; American Foxhounds by Tom Beecham

Hound Music is the sound that scent hounds make in “full cry,” when they are baying in harmony, and often in pursuit. My hounds do it when an emergency vehicle passes by with sirens blaring– they sing along. (Thankfully, they do not pursue!)

This blog, Hound Music, is an online magazine all about the American Foxhound.

They are a fascinating breed, one of the oldest recognized breeds in this c0untry (and developed by the father of our country, George Washington.) We will endeavor to bring you a little something about the American Foxhound every day.

It might be an antique photograph or a poem, or a discussion about structure. It might be a painting, or an old recipe for “dog bread” from a back issue of the Red Ranger. Maybe it will be about field trials, dog shows, pack hunting, different strains of the American Foxhound (the Penn Marydel, the Trigg, the July, the Walker, the Birdsong) or their histories. It might be about life with American Foxhounds, or challenges the breed presents, or the issue of the ever-shrinking gene pool in the American Kennel Club hounds. It might be a recording of hound music or a video of hound antics. But something new every day or so.

I’d like it to inclusive rather than exclusive, and in that spirit, contributions of stories, photos, articles and whathaveyou are welcome.

Questions are also welcome. We don’t always have an answer, but you’re welcome to ask anyway.
